Hyundai's latest invention.. a sliding door instead of the back door for SUVs

Autos: Hyundai has now come up with what it believes is the next step in making cars, especially crossovers, easier to live with. Conventional crossovers feature a top-hinged tailgate which provides a wide rear door opening but is often a cause for concern when parking in a parking space too close to a wall or another vehicle. And Hyundai fixed this with a new sliding tailgate design.

Leaked patent documents filed with the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) and approved last week show this new technology that could soon come to cars such as the Ionki 5, Tucson, Santa Fe, and Palisade. Instead of hinges and opening the door up, the tailgate will be like a sliding door in minivans, sliding over the roof of a crossover.

The tailgate will open sliding upwards via struts inserting through the sides of the roof with tilting units integrated into the hatch mechanism, and gas lift struts to raise the tailgate on the roof and move it forward to fully open the rear recess. Hyundai believes this will prevent the frustrating scenario of trying to open the tailgate only to realize you're parked too close to a wall.

In patent documentation, Hyundai proposes different technologies to achieve the end goal. These range from sliding rails typical of a minivan to hinges and levers that can be folded in a certain way to achieve the desired opening effect. The steering rails and struts can be located either along the outer edges of the roof or centrally depending on the vehicle's design and requirements.

Hyundai envisions this special use in crossovers as it is essential to the practical side of these vehicles.
